Goldwind Australia has received state development approval to integrate battery energy storage systems (BESS) at its 298MW Coppabella wind farm in New South Wales. The modification permits the co-location of four-hour, 5MW batteries at 53 turbine locations, establishing a 222.6MW storage asset with a 1,063MWh capacity.
Endorsed by the local planning department and network operator Transgrid, the DC-coupled configuration connects the batteries directly to the turbines. This approach minimises infrastructural redundancies by sharing converters and grid connections, significantly reducing capital expenditure. Furthermore, the hybrid design optimises performance, provides market arbitrage opportunities and delivers critical ancillary services to support grid stability.
Representing a major milestone for the domestic energy transition, the development is expected to become Australia’s first large-scale hybrid wind and battery project.
