The legal framework for the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power station has been established following a newly signed intergovernmental agreement. The development will feature two VVER-1200 pressurised water reactor units, delivering a combined installed capacity of 2,400MW.
Initially proposed in 2009 and paused in 2016 on cost grounds, the project has now been fully reinstated. This revival aligns with a revised national power development plan that allocates US$136bn to strengthen long-term energy security by 2030. The technology provider, Rosatom, will supply the Generation III+ reactor design, which is already operational across several global markets.
The main commercial facility is expected to come online before the end of 2031. Furthermore, the wider development programme includes a dedicated nuclear science and technology centre, with a feasibility study scheduled for completion in April 2026.
