Adhesive manufacturer tesa has signed an agreement with energy provider EWE to purchase 500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. Starting in 2028, the deliveries will supply tesa's Hamburg production facility to generate industrial steam and replace fossil fuels.
The green hydrogen will be produced at EWE's 320MW electrolysis plant in Emden, which is expected to begin operations by late 2027. To facilitate this transition, the Hamburg factory will connect to the emerging national hydrogen core network.
By utilising the resource through two dual-fuel steam boilers, the manufacturer expects to eliminate approximately 6,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This transformation project is also supported by public funding through a federal climate protection contract.
