State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) has concluded hot functional tests at Unit 3 of the Haiyang nuclear power plant in Shandong, China. Completed on 13 August 2026, these critical assessments simulate the temperatures and pressures the reactor will face during normal operations, ensuring all systems function correctly before nuclear fuel is loaded.
The testing phase involved 11 temperature platforms and 53 commissioning procedures, verifying the reliability of both the nuclear and conventional islands. Executed by CNNC Fifth Construction Company, this milestone paves the way for fuel loading and the unit's initial grid connection, targeted for later this year.
Unit 3 utilises CAP1000 technology. Once the first four units at the Haiyang facility are fully operational, they will generate 40bn kWh of electricity annually.
