Clean energy developer Pattern Energy Group has commenced full commercial operations at the SunZia renewable energy project. The development features a 3.65GW wind facility in New Mexico coupled with a 550-mile high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line routing power to Arizona and the wider western US grid.
Initiated in September 2023, the infrastructure asset is now delivering electricity sufficient to supply roughly 1m households. By deploying HVDC technology, the operator can efficiently transfer large-scale generation over vast distances, directly addressing regional constraints.
The overall scheme represents a capital investment exceeding US$20bn across both states. Over its first 30 years of operation, it will generate an estimated US$1.3bn in direct financial benefits for local authorities, schools and private landowners, alongside establishing more than 100 permanent operational roles.
