Norway-based operator G2 Ocean is expanding its fleet with an order for six 65,400dwt open-hatch ships from China's New Dayang Shipbuilding. Scheduled for delivery from 2029, the vessels will feature two overhead gantry cranes and a cargo capacity of 79,400 cubic metres, facilitating the transport of heavy breakbulk materials essential for the renewables sector.
Designed to run on alternative fuels including ammonia and methanol, two of the ships will be owned by Grieg Maritime Group, while four will be chartered to Gearbulk by Seaspan. This strategic investment bridges the capacity gap between G2 Ocean’s 72,000dwt and 55,000dwt vessel classes.
In a parallel decarbonisation effort, the company will install AirWing 20 jet sails on its 49,924dwt Star Kirkenes cargo ship by early 2027. This wind-assisted propulsion system aims to reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions.
