RWE has installed 80 of the 100 planned Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD turbines at the Sofia offshore wind farm. Located on Dogger Bank in the central North Sea, the 1.4GW development is advancing through its final construction phase and remains on track for commissioning later this year.
Cadeler’s Wind Peak vessel is executing the offshore deployment, having installed the first unit in March 2025. The vessel transports components for six turbines per trip from the port of Hull, with logistical support provided by the service operation vessel IWS Seawalker. Each turbine stands 252m above sea level and features 108m blades that sweep an area of 39,000 square metres.
The developer has already completed the installation of 50 units equipped with recyclable blades, which were deployed last year. Once fully operational, the 1.4GW facility will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 1.2m UK homes.
