Eight months after being initially rejected, Shell’s Jackdaw project has been granted official approval by the UK’s Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment & Decommissioning (OPRED). Production is now expected to start in the first half of 2025.
With negotiations at COP26 under the spotlight in 2021, Shell’s plans to develop the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea were halted due to concerns with its environmental impact.
Now, with the energy security agenda on the rise due to the effects of the war in Ukraine, Jackdaw is being reassessed. In March, Shell stated that Jackdaw’s emissions would decrease through the reduction of venting and change of a treatment process.
According to the developer, the Jackdaw field could produce 6.5% of the UK gas demand.
