Day-one featured discussions and presentations on decarbonisation efforts in the North Sea
London, 17 May 2022 - The EIC has concluded the first day of the North Sea Decarbonisation Conference, #NSDC2022, which featured speakers from major UK and global energy companies and organisations. The two-day event is held in London and continues tomorrow (18 May 2022).
Day-one witnessed discussions and presentations that touched on decarbonisation efforts in the North Sea while also addressing challenges of how to decarbonise the energy industry at a global level.
EIC is organising #NSDC2022 in partnership with Agoria, IRO, and World Forum Offshore Wind.
The opening session included presentations on decarbonisation projects which are reducing the North Sea’s carbon footprint in the interim and aim to develop it into an emission-free zone. Speakers included EIC’s experts, including Neil Golding, Head of Business Intelligence, and Diveena Danabalan, head of EIC Consult. Kent’s Les Newman also presented at the morning session.
A key takeaways from the “the Future of North Sea Offshore Wind Energy” session is the view of Dawn Robertson, of Bureau Veritas, the session’s sponsor, that wind power is contributing most to renewables growth and that Covid-19 tipped scale for offshore wind investments.
In the same session ScottishPower Renewables’ Kirsty Adams presented company projects such as MachairWind, while Vattenfall’s Catrin Ellis Jones discussed her company’s Norfolk Vanguard offshore wind farm. RWE’s Helen Thomas presented UK-based projects, including Sofia wind farm, and Equinor’s Matei Negrescu discussed Dogger Bank wind farm, among other projects.
Decarbonisation Challenge
Insights from the “Reinvention of Oil & Gas – The Decarbonisation Challenge” session include a call by David Clark, Vysus Group, the session’s sponsor, to companies and governments around the world to move forward with decarbonisation efforts. Wartislla’s Tim Burnett stressed that decarbonisation targets are “non-negotiable”. In a similar vein, Valentina Kretzschmar, Capricorn Energy, pointed out that energy companies should “quadruple” efforts to decarbonise the industry. Mott MacDonald’s Prem Mahi suggested that the focus should be on the repurposing and smart use of existing assets.
#NSDC2022 also featured two sessions on hydrogen technologies and projects. The sessions, sponsored by DNV and Wood, saw lively discussions on hydrogen technologies and their future applications.
The conference also included a session about electrification of the North Sea, sponsored by Worley.
The day was concluded by an evening networking reception.
