South Korean contractor Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) has signed a framework agreement with US developer First American Nuclear Company (FANCO) for the EAGL-1 small modular reactor (SMR) project.
The fourth-generation fast reactor utilises a lead-bismuth coolant to generate 240MW per unit. Operating on a closed-fuel cycle, the system recycles spent nuclear fuel to minimise radioactive waste. Furthermore, FANCO’s BridgePower solution allows operators to initially generate electricity via natural gas-fired boilers before transitioning seamlessly to nuclear energy using the same turbine infrastructure.
Hyundai E&C will support early-stage development, focusing on constructability reviews, modularisation strategies and balance of plant (BoP) design. The agreement positions Hyundai E&C to potentially become the project's engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner, supporting commercialisation efforts across the US.
