German transmission system operator Amprion has postponed the completion of its BalWin1 offshore grid connection by a year, with commissioning now scheduled for 15 September 2031.
The adjustment, approved by the German Federal Network Agency, is attributed to additional manufacturing requirements for the offshore converter platform, alongside challenging ground conditions at the onshore site. Once operational, the system will transport 2GW of electricity from North Sea wind turbines to the mainland.
RWE and TotalEnergies, developers of the connected Windbostel Ost wind farm, support the revised timeline. The new schedule reverts to the project's original 2031 target, which was previously accelerated following national legislative changes to Germany's offshore expansion goals.
Amprion confirmed that the sister project BalWin2 will also face delays, as Dragados Offshore and Siemens Energy are constructing the converter stations for both systems.
