KBR has announced that NorSAF has selected its proprietary PureSAF technology for a new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and e-SAF production plant in Latvia. Backed by the Avia Solutions Group, the facility is set to become the largest of its kind in Northern Europe.
The project is expected to produce 100,000t of SAF and e-SAF annually, with commercial operations scheduled to commence in 2030. KBR will license the technology, which was originally developed by Swedish Biofuels AB. This innovative process enables the co-processing of CO2 and syngas in the same plant to produce a 100% drop-in, fungible jet fuel without the need for traditional blending.
The development strongly aligns with the EU's ambitious Fit for 55 climate package, which mandates a minimum 6% SAF blend at European airports by 2030. Ultimately, the project aims to strengthen regional energy sovereignty and reduce dependence on external fossil fuel markets.
