National Grid has installed the final pole on its 55-mile segment of the Smart Path Connect transmission project in New York State. This milestone involved erecting 644 steel monopoles from Croghan to Marcy, with crews simultaneously surpassing one million field work hours.
Developed alongside the New York Power Authority (NYPA), the broader initiative involves rebuilding 100 miles of ageing infrastructure into a resilient 345kV transmission network. Scheduled for completion in June 2026, the upgraded grid will enable the flow of an additional 1,000MW of renewable energy, including hydropower, wind and solar.
The development supports New York's ambitious clean energy targets, aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.16m tonnes annually while significantly easing regional transmission congestion.
