Energy consultancy Penspen has been appointed to lead a pivotal research project assessing the integration of hydrogen across major UK industrial clusters, including Teesside, Humber, Merseyside, and Grangemouth. The "Hydrogen Transition Pathways" study—delivered alongside Future Energy Networks (FEN), Northern Gas Networks, and Xoserve—will provide a strategic roadmap for decarbonising the country's heavy-industry hubs.
Supported by Penspen’s Centre of Engineering Excellence, the comprehensive assessment will evaluate four critical areas: projected hydrogen supply and demand, the co-existence of hydrogen with natural gas and biomethane out to 2050, local network conversion costs, and the wider socio-economic impacts of deployment.
The resulting framework will deliver cluster-level conversion playbooks and actionable roadmaps. By providing clear, evidence-based technical insights, the project aims to guide strategic planning, prevent misaligned capital investment, and accelerate the UK's transition to a low-carbon energy system.
