Equinor has announced the financial close of the first development phase of the Empire Wind project, having secured over US$3bn in financing. The power plant, which is already under construction, should be able to power over 500,000 households in New York.
Located off the coast of Long Island, Empire Wind I's backers have not been disclosed. According to Equinor, the facility should be the first operational offshore wind farm to be connected to the New York grid.
The 810MW offshore wind farm (as well as its 1.2GW second development phase) is fully owned by Equinor since last year, when the company acquired a stake previously held by bp.
