Voith Hydro has been selected to conduct the front-end engineering design (FEED) study for the Hollow Mountain underground pumped storage hydro power plant in the UK. The contract has been awarded by developer Drax.
The 600MW project is also known as Cruachan 2, since it will be built next to Drax's existing Cruachan power station in Scotland. The company calculates a total investment of £500m for Hollow Mountain's completion.
Exploratory ground works and seismic surveys are currently underway at the site. Hollow Mountain is recognised as the UK's first pumped storage hydro system in 40 years.
