British Rolls-Royce SMR and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy have been shortlisted by Vattenfall as the company's potential suppliers in a nuclear power project in Sweden. To be built adjacent to the Ringhals nuclear power plant on the southwestern coast of the country, this project will involve the construction of at least two small modular reactors (SMR).
With feasibility studies ongoing since 2022, each reactor of the project would have a capacity ranging from 170 to 470MW, depending on the build.
The proposals by Rolls-Royce and GE will now be further analysed by Vattenfall. The aim is for the first reactor to start up by the mid-2030s at the earliest.
