Steel and mining company ArcelorMittal has joined Casa dos Ventos in the development of the Babilônia Centro project in Brazil, the former holding 55% of the newly-formed joint venture while Casa dos Ventos will hold the remaining 45%.
The deal has been approved by Brazil’s antitrust watchdog CADE and will be completed within the next few weeks.
Babilônia Centro will be a 554MW wind farm built in the state of Bahia. It will require the installation of 123 wind turbines and its development plan also includes the possibility of a 100MW expansion with solar power generation.
ArcelorMittal will offtake the power output for a 20-year period under a contract yet to be signed between the parties. Construction is planned to being late this year and commercial operations are expected in 2025.
