QatarEnergy (QE) has chosen Samsung C&T as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for two major photovoltaic (PV) projects in the country. The facilities, summing up to 875MW in capacity, will be installed in the industrial cities of Masaieed and Ras Laffan.
Qatar’s Minister of Energy Affairs Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi and president of Samsung C&T Sechul Oh were present during the contract’s signing ceremony.
QE’s roadmap for the next years envisages by 2035 a solar generation of 5GW.
The company’s carbon emissions from its LNG plants are planned to be reduced through solar power. Combined, the Masaieed and Ras Laffan projects should represent a reduction of approximately 30%.
Start-up for both the plants is expected in late 2024.
