Algeria, Nigeria and Niger have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development of the $13bn Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project. The pipeline will run over 4,000km, starting in Warri, Nigeria, crossing Niger and ending in Hassi R’Mel, Algeria.
The project will allow the transportation of up to 30 billion cubic metres (bcm) per year of natural gas. This amount will follow to Europe through links with existing pipelines in Algeria.
The Trans-Saharan initiative has been under planning for almost 40 years. It has been recently resumed in June 2022 after an agreement between the three countries.
Industry sources indicate that feasibility studies are currently ongoing since July.
