Wärtsilä has been awarded contracts by Clearway Energy Group for the provision of five energy storage systems in the United States. In total, the portfolio will have 500MWac/2GWh of capacity in California and Hawaii.
In California, these initiatives include the Dagget 2 and Dagget 3 plants, which have a combined photovoltaic (PV) capacity of 482MWac and an energy storage capacity of 275MWac/1.1GWh. Construction is already ongoing and start-up is scheduled for 2023.
Dagget 2 and 3 are located in San Bernardino, close to a decommissioned coal and natural gas facility.
Also in California with start of operations expected in 2023 is a 147MWac/588MWh energy storage project in Kern County. This will be linked to the existing 192MWac Rosamond Central solar power plant.
In Hawaii, the remaining two projects by Clearway Energy Group receiving Wärtsilä’s support are the Mililani I and Waiawa solar plants in Oahu. Combined, the storage facilities will have a capacity of 75MWac/300MWh.
Being Wärtsilä’s first utility-scale installation in Hawaii, both Mililani I and Waiawa’s storage systems will see its conclusion in 2022 still.
