Snowy Hydro has received environmental approval from the Australian Government for its 660MW Hunter power project in Kurri Kurri, New South Wales' (NSW) Hunter Valley.
With this approval, the state-owned energy company will be able to start construction on the project, which will create up to 600 direct jobs at the peak of its construction.
The Hunter power project will be built partly on the site of the former Kurri Kurri aluminium smelter, which closed in 2012.
The project will include two heavy-duty, open-cycle gas turbines, which will be capable of operating on natural gas, hydrogen, and diesel.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2022. The commissioning is likely to be in mid-2023, just ahead of the closure of the Liddell power station.
