Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG) has acquired the rights for the 260MW Kattegatt offshore wind farm project offshore Sweden from engineering services company Agrivind AB.
The development stage project will be located off the coast of the Falkenberg municipality. Once operational, it is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 95,000 households.
According to the firm, Sweden’s aim to produce 100% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2040. Significant expansion in Sweden's offshore wind capacity is expected to help reach this objective.
Svenska kraftnät, Swedish electricity transmission system operator, predicts that the country’s current offshore wind operational capacity of 191MW could reach 4 GW by 2035.
Kattegatt is one of only three approved projects in Sweden and is playing a leading role in this fast-growing market. It is expected to reduce the country’s CO2 emissions by up to 49kt per annum.
Wind Sweden, which previously supported Agrivind on the development of the Kattegatt project for over three years, is also expected to continue its support to GIG.
