A consortium formed by Sumitomo Electric Industries and cable installation partner Van Oord Offshore Wind UK has been selected as the preferred bidder of the Shetland 2 project by SSEN Transmission.
Shetland 2 is a transmission project that intends to install a 525kV high voltade direct current (HVDC) subsea cable connecting ScotWind's offshore wind farms with Great Britain's grid.
This is a second HVDC link whose need has just been confirmed by the National Grid. The project is part of SSEN's plans to invest £5bn in the energy infrastructure of northern Sctoland.
Works for the first Shetland transmission line are already in progress and should be concluded this year.
