SSE Renewables has bought a 100MW/200MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project from Heron Energy. The facility is planned to be installed in Dungannon, Northern Ireland.
The 2-hour battery system called Derrymeen is expected to be Northern Ireland's largest BESS plant to date.
Derrymeen, which is ready to build on a greenfield site, is pending a final investment decision (FID) from SSE Renewables.
Once construction begins, the battery system should be operational by late 2026.
