About this event

The EIC is happy to announce the São Paulo Breakfast: Opportunities in the Renewables and Power Generation Sectors with Andrade Gutierrez and Petrobras

Andrade Gutierrez is one of Brazil's largest engineering and construction firms, with diversified operations across infrastructure, energy, public concessions and industrial services. Andrade Gutierrez's extensive experience in the energy sector is underscored by its involvement in around 50% of Brazil's hydroelectric projects, including the Itaipu hydropower plant, one of the largest in the world.

The company is involved in the construction of the 1.7 GW GNA II combined cycle power plant (CCPP), scheduled to start operations in Rio de Janeiro in January 2025. The project will contribute to the implementation of the largest gas-fired complex using super-chilled LNG as fuel in Latin America. In late 2023, a consortium featuring Consag Engenharia commenced construction of the 1.6 GW Novo Tempo Barcarena II gas-fired power plant, located near the Barcarena LNG import terminal in the state of Pará. When complete in Q3 2026, the facility will provide natural gas to the the Alunorte alumina refinery for 15 years.

Petrobras, founded in 1953, is one of the world's largest oil companies and engages in biofuel production and electricity generation, with investments in renewables. Since the early 2000s, Petrobras has expanded into thermoelectric plants, now managing a generation park with 5.3GW of installed capacity, ranking sixth in Brazil for installed generation capacity. The company owns 14 thermoelectric plants across various regions around the country.

In terms of offshore wind potential, Petrobras has the most significant capacity under evaluation by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA). The company has recently signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the governments of Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Norte for pilot projects to explore future developments. Petrobras has also requested licensing for projects in 10 areas, most of them in the Northeast region, reaching up to 23GW. Additionally, the developer has partnered with Equinor to conduct feasibility studies in seven more areas with a capacity of up to 14.5GW.
